Uyo to host maiden National Open Water Swimming tourney
The maiden edition of President Muhammadu Buhari National Youth Open Water Swimming competition is to be staged between June 23 and 28 in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
The youth tournament will be attended by swimmers from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT.
It is expected that talented swimmers in the sport would be discovered for nurturing into star athletes.
The organisers of the tournament quoted the minister of Youths and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung as saying the game of swimming will continue to be used as a means of empowering the teeming youths of the country.
The minister said apart from helping to discover hidden talents, the competition will engender peace, unity and progress in the country.
“The tournament is in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive for the development of multiple medal winning sports for future successes in international competitions.”
The Unity Cup 2016 which is packaged by Josdan Global Peace Foundation network in collaboration with the Nigeria Aquatic Federation and the Grassroots Sports Department of the Youth and Sports ministry is also to help free the youths from social vices like terrorism.
The organising body also believes that the open water swimming competition for Mr. President is one way of carrying out its corporate social responsibility.
There will be trophies and certificates as well as cash prizes for winners in various categories at the end of the competition.
